You feel the triggers coming.

Edward J. Fair, US Army 1970 - 1972, talks about how he knew he had PTSD.

Transcript

Certain times of the year are trigger points

in my life, like October.

We had bad battles at the time, so it comes back.

And you say, "Well, I'm not going to think about it,"

but you don't have to think, it just sneaks up on you.

It's like a ghost in the night saying, "Hello, I'm back!"

[laughs] So you learn to deal with that.

You learn to, you feel the triggers coming.

Your brain's acting on smells, sounds that bring memories up.

You'd be surprised the things that,

certain songs can get me off, get me rolling right

down the hill with anger, depression

and then others will do the complete opposite, cheer me up.

How can I put it?

It's things that you have to learn

and you need outside help to look at you.

You need a sounding board.
