Dr. Matthew Yoder, Clinical Psychologist, answers common questions about PTSD.

Veterans who come in often are concerned

that they've been trying to push away memories for a long time,

and they don't like thinking about them.

It makes them feel bad,

and it makes them feel nervous and afraid.

But in reality, there's nothing dangerous about a memory.

A memory can't actually hurt somebody.

It can make you feel bad, right?

But that's temporary.

Actually being hurt by or being in danger

from a memory just isn't possible.

So sitting in a safe space with a doctor or a therapist

and being able to talk about what you've been

through is not actually dangerous.

And it takes a bit of time,

but over a course of several weeks,

the memory becomes less intense and less powerful

when one can sit and talk about it.
