When that trigger...happened, I could respond.

I finally realized that these skills and tools

that they were trying to teach me,

I had to turn those into my new battle drills.

So, when you haven't slept in three days,

you haven't eaten in two,

it's 100 plus degrees

and you got 140 pounds of junk on your back,

when that event happens...

(snaps fingers)

You can respond.

You can take action.

And that's what I had to do with these things

that I learned through therapy,

is I had to practice 'em.

And it took a while.

Some worked better than others,

and I had to figure out what worked for me

in which situations.

So when that trigger event happened,

I could respond.

When somebody said something that ticked me off,

I knew which tools I had to break out

to keep from wanting to rip their head off.

And I had to practice 'em over and over and over.

I still have to practice.
