Looking back at it again, as a 12- or 13-year-old,

my father went to work one day

and then came home, and there was a problem.

And that's basically how it happened.

He was a Army Reservist, and when they closed up his unit,

he ran Fort Greene, in Narragansett,

when they closed up his unit and said, "It's time to retire,"

everything came unwound.

I remember the day.

It was a summer day,

and it was close to my brother's graduation,

and sort of all hell broke loose.

And I had not a clue what was going on, and it took

years before there was even a name attached

to what was going on.

And that's how it happened, just...

As far as I can remember, literally, just leaving for work

and coming home a different person, simple as that.
