Chris Swift (US Army, 1999-2018) explains how concurrent treatment for PTSD and substance use helped him make the connection between his PTSD symptoms and drinking.

Transcript

When I did my treatment, it was

done with separate therapists

and how they had it at the dom,

it would be like each

hallway was a different program.

So you'd have your substance

abuse down one hallway.

You'd have your general

mental health, which is your

anxiety, depression,

and then you go to

your PTSD hallway.

Having those therapies

at the same time,

I believe it was very helpful

doing them together,

Just because I got to see

both sides of it.

I got to see, all right,

I have a drinking problem,

all right?

I have PTSD.

How did I deal with PTSD?

I drank.

And then you add two

and two together,

you get four and you're like,

oh my God.

So I've been masking the PTSD

with my excessive drinking.
