What if I'm self-medicating with drugs and/or alcohol?

Dr. Ron Acierno, Clinical Psychologist, answers common questions about PTSD.

Transcript

In the past, there was some thinking that

you must treat substance abuse before you can treat PTSD.

Currently though, we have found and we continue to find

that both posttraumatic stress disorder

and substance use can be treated concurrently,

and it's only when there is severe levels of consistent

intoxication, meaning you get drunk all the time, you get high

all the time every day, that's when we

really have to focus on the substance abuse first.

Otherwise, it's best to get treatment and get treatment

as soon as possible for both.
