What if i don't like my therapist right off the bat?

Dr. Peter Tuerk, Clinical Psychologist, answers common questions about PTSD.

Transcript

Well, it's very unlikely, I would say, that you just

wouldn't like your therapist right off the bat,

and that's for a number of reasons.

One of them is that we work very hard

in the VA, in general, to really respect Veterans,

but the other reason is these evidence-based treatments

for PTSD, they're really about doing.

So right off the bat, you start actually doing things

with your therapist, and so you develop a sort of

teamwork very quickly out of the gates.

And so typicall,y what we find out is that

even though, you know, maybe this is a person that you

wouldn't necessarily buddy up to on the side of the street

or you wouldn't find yourself in the same events,

that there is sort of a teamwork that builds,

and you're both working towards similar goals.
