What if I come apart?

James Jones, Social Worker, answers common questions about PTSD.

Transcript

I think the most common concern a Veteran might have

when coming into treatment is that thought that

"If I talk about this, I'll come apart" or, "The anxiety

around talking about what's happened in the past,

no one is going to believe me, they'll think I'm crazy.

If I start to feel emotions, they're never going to turn off."

Those are very common, very common,

I would say symptoms, even, of PTSD,

this kind of doubting oneself, you know,

"Am I OK to talk about this?"

And that's why it takes a bit of time

in the beginning to establish that trust

because trust is a huge issue with posttraumatic stress.
