"We started to realize, ""He has real issues here...""

Patricia Angstadt, Daughter of a Veteran with PTSD, talks about how PTSD affected her family.

Transcript

When my dad told me about this, I was working

for the government at the time, and he said, "You know,

I think I'm entitled to go to the VA for medical benefits."

We weren't even thinking anything about posttraumatic

stress syndrome, didn't realize that he even had it

because he has a wonderful personality, he's very outgoing,

and we just didn't recognize it.

And so we put the paperwork through,

and then I started going with him to the doctors' offices,

the doctor visits at the VA, and then we started to realize,

he has real issues here that were never addressed,

that were never brought to the surface,

and that were never recognized.

And it took a while, but he had full support of our family.

We were behind him 100 percent, whatever

he wanted to do, we were with him 100 percent.

So he had our support, and it would be sad

for a Veteran if they didn't have the support,

but there is support at the Veterans.

At the VA, there is plenty of support

for the troops and for the soldiers.

They are really there for you,

so you need to take advantage of it.

They're there for you.
