Dr. Karen Kattar (Clinical Psychologist) describes PTSD treatment.

Transcript

When someone is unsure about what treatment might be

right for them, we sit down on that very first session

and talk about all the treatment options.

So I'll give a lot of education about,

this is what CPT looks like, this is what PE looks like,

and other options that we have as well, but those are our two

top therapies in the world for the treatment of trauma.

And usually someone will say, "You know what,

I'm used to journaling, so I think I like that writing therapy,

so I might want to do that one."

Or someone might say to me, "You know, I get it,

intellectually I get that I'm not in danger, but I am still not

able to go to that grocery store when it's really crowded."

And so if I see someone who's doing a lot of avoidance

more behaviorally, more with their actions,

then I might think of Prolonged Exposure, or PE, because

that one starts with that and helps someone move through that.

If someone is more inclined to express themselves

through writing or they're more inclined to express themselves

through the telling of the story and not through writing,

that helps me, too, to decide.
