We had sought out marriage counseling initially.

SPC Toby Brace, US Army 1996 - present, talks about when he knew he needed to get help for PTSD.

Transcript

You know, I'd often be distant with my wife.

There were just things I didn't want to talk about.

I noticed there was things that, to sit down and even as silly

as to play video games with my kids or whatever,

I just had no interest.

My boy would want to come up and give me hug

and it was like, "My bubble space.

Give me some room."

So yeah, it was definitely taking a little bit of a toll.

At first it seemed minor, but I was aware of it.

It was one of the things initially before I even knew

about the PTSD is it was affecting enough

that I had talked with my wife and we had sought

out marriage counseling initially and through that led

to our counselor suggesting

that maybe I should have some additional testing or screening

for the PTSD symptoms.
