We don't try to explain away what you did.

Dr. Shira Maguen describes what treatment for moral injury is like.

Transcript

Part of what we do in moral

injury treatment
is really be able to look at

how you feel about yourself
because of what you did.

And unpack that a little bit.

So what we don't do
is we don't try to explain away

what you did. Right.

We actually acknowledge, yes,

you did something that went
against your morals and values.

That's a really important piece.

So we meet the person
where they're at

and we try to work on, you know,
looking at self-forgiveness

and what that would look like
for them

and an acceptance of like, yes,
I did this horrible thing.

Now what? Am I going to continue
to suffer my entire life?

That's a choice, right?

Or am I going to continue to
maybe explore this a little bit

more with the therapist
in the room

and see if there's any small
opening to letting just a little

bit of self forgiveness in.
