They were actually able to help me steer through it and start getting better.

MAJ Joshua Brandon (US Army, 2002 - present) talks about what PTSD treatment was like.

A lot of guys in the military have this notion that, "Hey,

I'm not going to talk to someone that hasn't been there.

I need to have a therapist that has been to war."

Well, first problem with that is not all therapists,

it's not a prerequisite in grad school

or psychiatry to go to war.

What I found was that people that had been there,

it was good to talk to them on a one-on-one level as a friend

or share that experiences but it was much better to have somebody

that hadn't been there that was very objective about it and came

at it at a completely different angle, completely different set

of preconceived notions on it and they were actually able

to help me steer through and start getting better.
