There are many treatments for PTSD but there are only a few...that have been proven to work.

Dr. Peter Tuerk, Clinical Psychologist, shares advice for people who may be concerned about PTSD.

I would highly suggest to any Veteran coming into our clinic

that they get an evidence-based treatment.

There are many treatments out there for PTSD,

but there are only a few, a handful maybe,

that have solid scientific evidence,

that have been proven to work.

There's also been a lot more evidence

in the last just five years in the VA

that Prolonged Exposure therapy

or Cognitive Processing Therapy can really work well

in Veteran populations.

Sometimes I think they might even work better than in some

other populations because Veterans are used to facing fears,

Veterans are used to doing difficult things.

We really want to craft our therapies to match the strengths

of the Veterans in front of us, and if there's something

that separates out Veterans from non-Veterans,

and I'm not sure that there is, people are typically people,

but if there is, I think it's that Veterans have been through

difficult experiences and they know what it takes to get

through more difficult experiences.

It's a strength of theirs.
