The [therapy] group was a really safe environment.

Michelle Fisher (US Air Force, 2000 - 2011) talks about what PTSD treatment was like.

Transcript

At first it was, I didn't know what to expect,

but the group was a really safe environment.

I could participate as much as I wanted to or as little

as I wanted to, and the facilitators, the therapists there,

they were just trying to teach us basic coping skills.

They had a book called Seeking Safety

that they would follow in modules.

And they would assign homework, but it was very loose.

It was really hard to walk away from those groups

without thinking about what we discussed,

and then it was really hard to go to the group

and not take part in the conversations

and find a little bit of healing there.

You know, like, "Yeah, I do do this.

When I'm triggered I lash out at the people around me.

I hurt the people that love me, they do become my perpetrator."

And the group would, the facilitators and the book

and everything taught me how to understand that,

and I think that was the very, very first step

towards becoming healthier.

The day I was able to tell myself, like,

"This is my PTSD," helped a lot

because I had a lot of guilt, too.
