I did a mind-over-mood therapy class, which really kind of
helped me understand how being in Iraq created these
core defense mechanisms that you just can't turn off,
and not necessarily focusing on trying to do that,
but focus on more of just coping with it.
I've sat in seminars and dealt with things,
like my favorite that I thought was
one of the most eye-opening ones was this,
a little bit of therapy called "the new normal."
And it allowed me the ability to understand that
this is the new normal me.
The old normal me may not come back and probably won't,
but with that, it allowed me to say,
"Hey look, it's time I built on this.
Let's focus on now, not yesterday, and move forward
with becoming a better, not necessarily better, but
learning to cope with my issues that occur."
