Read as much as you can about [PTSD].

Deborah Venella, Daughter of a Veteran with PTSD, shares advice for people who may be concerned about PTSD.

For family members of anyone who is going through PTSD,

my recommendation is to read as much as you can about it,

to understand as much as you can about it

so that it gives you the skills you need and the

coping mechanisms to help your family member who has it.

I think, sometimes, we just can't relate to what they're

going through because we've never gone through it.

It's the same with any life experience, really,

but I think more so for war because it's so extreme

and so out of the ordinary, and the things that they see

and the things they experience and the smells, the sounds

are different than anything we could know just being at home.

So I think learning about it as much as we can,

being willing to listen to our family members who have it,

to engage them in discussion if they're willing to discuss it,

if they want to be quiet about it, not to bother them,

just to be a little bit more sensitive and to understand

what they're going through, is the most important thing

that family members of Veterans who suffer with PTSD can do.
