PTSD is something that takes that control away from you.

Jeff McDowell, US Army 1985 - 2007, talks about why he didn't ask for help with his PTSD right away.

Military personnel, it's all about control with them, OK.

They train you that way.

They teach you that way and then you come out,

it's not anything you just shed.

And PTSD is something that takes that control away from you.

There's a lot of anxiety from not having control of some

of the things you say, some of the things you act.

You know, do you introduce yourself to someone as, "Hi.

My name is Jeff PTSD."

It's like no, you don't.

You don't want to be like that.

You don't want people to look at you and don't want to be

around you because they're so afraid that they're going

to say something that's going to cause you to go off,

which isn't true most of the time, but they still think that.

So, if you can be around people and be as close

to who you were before, then you can move forward.
