PTSD arises when the normal reaction to traumatic events doesn't stop.

Dr. Jay Rosen, Clinical Psychologist, explains what PTSD is.

Transcript

PTSD arises when the normal reactions

to traumatic events don't stop.

And so it's sort of a extended period of time

where one is sort of caught or trapped in the

fight-flight-or-freeze response, which is a normal human --

in fact, every biological creature has that hard-wired,

that response hard-wired into them,

this fight-flight-or-freeze response,

and PTSD arises when that response

is happening when it shouldn't.

And it's oftentimes triggered by events where

you should experience that fight-flight-or-freeze response.
