People with PTSD have certain kinds of symptoms...

Dr. Kathryn Doyle, Clinical Psychologist, explains what PTSD is.

Transcript

Whether you're talking to somebody with sexual trauma,

or combat trauma, or somebody who gets into a car accident

and is having PTSD from that experience,

the symptoms that they have are almost the same,

and what I get over, and over, and over again

are people saying to me, "How do you know all this about me?"

And how I know all this about them is because they have PTSD,

and people with PTSD have certain kinds of symptoms.

They re-experience the traumatic event

either through dreams or memories, flashbacks.

They have heightened anxiety, or what we call "hyper-arousal,"

which is just being more alert

and looking around their environment all the time

to make sure everything's safe.

They can be depressed and angry, struggle with relationships.

There are a whole host of symptoms that are similar across

people regardless of what kind of trauma they've experienced.

That's why the treatments can work

regardless of the type of trauma that you experience.
