My diabetic nurse asked me I had ever been sexually harassed.

Nina Whittam, US Air Force 1953 - 1954, talks about when she knew she needed to get help for PTSD.

Transcript

I'd never even heard the words PTSD

until my diabetic nurse asked me if I had ever been

sexually harassed or assaulted when I was in the military.

And I know I was pretty shocked for her asking me that,

and I said, "Yes, but why do you ask me that?"

And she said she was asking all of her patients that week

the same question.

So then, she asked me a couple of more questions,

and I answered her, and she sent me to a clinic

down in the Valley to be interviewed

with a nurse practitioner that was holding counseling

for women that had been harassed.

But after talking to her, I realized, yes, I did have PTSD.

Yes, I did have nightmares, and they weren't fun.
