"Mommy, why is daddy crying?"

Arthur Jefferson, US Army 1978 - 1998, talks about how his PTSD affected his loved ones.

Transcript

It affected my wife in a way that,

I was always a quiet individual,

but it affected her in a way that it was less communication.

We didn't venture out as much as we used to

because I was hurt.

It affected my daughter because

she was very concerned of her father, me.

"Daddy are you alright?"

Always asking me, "Daddy are you alright?"

"I see you woke up sweating."

And I would like, "Yeah, Daddy is fine," I did not want her

to be exposed to anything, me being waking up--

I'm the bread provider, I'm supposed to be strong.

I would be crying at times that I would wake up sweating

and it affected her because she would always like,

"Mommy, why is Daddy crying?"
