A lot of times people come in because they've had some sort of crisis.

Dr. Matthew Yoder, Clinical Psychologist, explains how to know if you're ready to get help for PTSD.

Transcript

People who come to therapy, unfortunately, come

because they have hit some sort of crisis

or they have hit rock bottom in some way.

That's not all the time the case, but a lot of patients I see

come in because they've had some sort of crisis that's due

to their disorder like PTSD.

So for example, sometimes patients come in

because their significant other is threatening to leave them

or has left them because of their behavior,

or that they aren't able to form relationships

with their children, or they are starting to feel like

life doesn't really have much meaning for them,

and that brings them into therapy.

So unfortunately, a lot of times people come in

because they've had some sort of crisis.

Now, that doesn't have to be that way.

A lot of patients, I also have patients who come in

who are just curious, and they've heard about good treatments

at the VA, and they want to

come in and get some help.

I find that people who are motivated

to complete therapy are the ones who do the best.
