Keep lines of communication open.

Florence Vaught, Wife of a Veteran with PTSD, shares advice for people who may be concerned about PTSD.

Transcript

The most important thing for a family member,

both the patient or the person with PTSD and the spouse,

is to keep lines of communication open.

One of the things that Jim does that is helpful to me

is that he will say after an episode -- and I'm talking about

something that's directed at me, not a bad dream --

he will say to me, "I am sorry, my PTSD has just kicked in."

And then we walk away, and he gets himself under control,

and I get my hurt feelings out of the way,

and then we come back.

The key to it for both the patient, the person with PTSD,

or me, the wife, or the children, is communication.
