The judge gave me the ultimatum

John Paul, US Marine Corps, 1966 - 1969, talks about when he knew he needed to get help for PTSD.

Transcript

I didn't think there was
anything wrong with me.

I thought everybody else
was screwed up and

I was fine,

but (laughs) I
kept winding up

in jail and in front
of the judge,

and finally the judge
gave me the ultimatum

that if he saw me in his
courtroom one more time

he was gonna send
me to prison.

He gave me the
opportunity to seek help,

and I took him up on
that opportunity.

The VA was just starting up

with their

Vietnam veterans
readjustment

counseling centers,

and that was the only thing
that I knew of

or could find

that might be able to help,
so that's where I went,

and thank God I did.

And like I said, I'd
have wound up in prison

or on a slab somewhere,

that's the road I
was going down.
