It was hard for me to come to terms that I needed help.

Damien Holmes, US Army, US Marine Corps 1993 - 2005, talks about why he didn't ask for help with his PTSD right away.

Transcript

At first, it was hard for me to come to terms that I need help.

You know what I'm saying?

'Cause we weren't bred like that.

We were bred as being tough and strong and tough-skinned

and everything like that.

It doesn't matter how much we hurt on the inside,

it's the outside that matters, you know what I'm saying?

So it's like, actually coming to terms and deciding that hey,

I need some help, it was a long road to that.

And it was kind of sad to say

that it took a physical altercation for that

to be the deciding factor.
