It was hard to maintain relationships, especially new ones.

Guillermo Sanchez, US Army 2003 - 2006, talks about how his PTSD affected his loved ones.

Dealing with relationships after coming back from a deployment,

like the first few years after getting out of the military,

weren't exactly the longest ones.

[laughs] They were very short.

I think a lot of that had to do also because I had a lot

of issues to deal with, anger being one of them,

and sometimes, other people weren't patient enough to stick

around and wait for you to go through that process of healing,

or for them to understand while you're going through it.

So, it was hard to maintain relationships,

especially new ones.

It was hard to maintain relationships

with family members.

It's a lot harder to maintain them with someone

that you really haven't met or known for that long.

So, it took a while I guess 'til I eventually found

someone steady.

But even then, looking back on it now, it only helped

out because I was friends with her

for a few years before we ever started dating.

So, she knew me more and she could put

up with my misbehavings a little bit more, so.
