Is it too late for me?

Dr. Matthew Yoder, Clinical Psychologist, answers common questions about PTSD.

Transcript

There are a lot of people who have lived with PTSD

for a very long time and have ingrained patterns of behavior,

but it really is never too late

to seek help and to get better.

We have data in our clinic

that shows Vietnam Veterans respond very well

to this treatment and on average, get better.

They lose the diagnosis at the end of therapy.

I also did therapy with an 88-year-old World War II Veteran

who had been living with PTSD for well over 60 years.

He had a great story.

He was parachuted in behind enemy lines during the Normandy

invasion and was captured by the Nazis,

spent several months in a POW camp and escaped,

traveled by foot and train across Europe into Russia

and actually reunited with American troops in Egypt

and had developed PTSD as a result of this and lived with it

and functioned with it for quite some time,

but came to us for help when he was 88 years old,

and in 10 weeks, he no longer had PTSD.
