I remember my first
appointment with Dr. Sachs,
and I didn't know who Dr. Sachs was,
man, woman, white, Black,
Asian, I didn't know.
I was just like, "Okay, I'm
going to get some help."
And when I walked in the office
and saw this little short,
skinny, white woman,
I just knew she couldn't help me.
What could she do for me?
I'm a strong, powerful Black woman,
and what can this little
skinny woman do for me?
And we sat down and talked
about what I had been going through.
And I expected Dr. Sachs to say some magic
or give me some pills or
something and the PTSD be gone.
But Dr. Sachs, after I had told her
everything I was going through,
she said, "Well, what are
you gonna do about it?"
I said, "What am I going to do
about it? You're the doctor."
She said, "Yeah, but
you have to do the work.
"What do you want to happen?"
And I told her that I
wanted all of this weight,
all these symptoms,
everything that I had been
carrying all these years,
I want it off my back, I
want it off my shoulders.
She said, "Well, you got work to do.
"Are you willing to do
it?" And I said, "Yes."
And I'm going to tell you,
today I love Dr. Sachs.
That skinny white woman helped me.
