I would smell something and then that would appear in that nightmare…

Jerry Boggess, US Army, 1962 - 1986, talks about how he knew he had PTSD.

Transcript

I was having nightmares.

They weren't every night,
but they were periodic.

I tried to figure out many
times what was

triggering them,

and I really couldn't.

But I did finally figure
out that many times

it was just a smell that
was sort of stayed with me,

and stayed with me
sometimes for two

or three days.

I would smell something,
and then that would appear

in that nightmare, because
many of the

nightmares that I had

there was this distinct
odor always there.

Always there.
