Louis Bickford (US Navy, 1967 - 1978) talks about what PTSD treatment was like.

Transcript

You know, I went in just to see if I could get something.

I was bound and determined I was gonna work the system, you know.

They owed me something, I'm sure,

you know, I had that attitude.

So I did my first PTSD interview and fortunately Pat Noonan

who I still work with was my Intake Counselor

and she is an expert at making you feel at ease.

And you don't even realize you're talking about the things

that are bothering you, you know, just very gently,

easily it comes out in a conversation.

She didn't say, "Well, you know, do you have this?

Do you have that or whatever?"

You're just talking to her.

Next thing you know, she's got your form all filled out

and then she goes, "Well, you know, here's the scores

and you've got these things going on and these issues going

on and I'd like to have you come back with your wife next time

and maybe we can both talk.

By the way, I'd like to set you up with an appointment

with a psychiatrist because I think maybe some,

because of your anger issues maybe some

of the medication would help that."

So that was the beginning.
