I was scared they were going to say I was crazy.

Laurent G. Taillefer II, US Army 2003 - 2006, talks about why he didn't ask for help with his PTSD right away.

Transcript

I was scared to say anything, especially to my family,

but also to doctors because I was scared

that they were going to say I was crazy.

Any mental health facility in the country is going to have

their rumor about, you know, the floor they take you

and they never hear from you again.

And that is a real fear for a lot of guys.

You were a hero yesterday, but tomorrow

you might be in solitary or something.

That kind of fear is motivational, you know what I mean?

You keep scary tidbits from others' knowledge.

And what you learn, through group therapy at least, is that

that is the most painful thing that you can do for yourself.

It is counterintuitive, it doesn't help you at all.
