They immediately put me in the detox ward.
It was a 28 day program.
There was another Vietnam Vet in the group.
He was nuttier than I was,
and he was Brown Water Navy, served on a gunboat.
We were disruptive.
We carried on like maniacs and they didn't understand it.
They didn't know how to deal with it
because they didn't know about PTSD.
They were looking at us as alcoholics.
So my 28 days came and went and I said, "Well,
I'm ready to go home."
They said, "No, you're not."
I said, "Excuse me?"
"Yeah, your time's up, but you're not fixed, son.
You need to stick around."
So my 28 day program extended into 35 days.
And plus aftercare, plus an AA program.
The thing that I found was that I started
to understand myself better and how I got to where I was.
And I kind of, I had an idea where I wanted to go.
And by following the path that others suggested to me,
it's turned my life around.
