I knew that I needed help for my family.

Michelle Rentas (US Army, 1992 - 1995) talks about when she knew she needed to get help for PTSD.

Transcript

I was raped while I was serving my time

in the military by another soldier.

And I felt ashamed and I felt like being an MP

that that should not have happened to me.

I started to abuse alcohol and drugs to the extent

that I was dependent on them.

And I know that was for trying

to self-medicate and numb my feelings.

And I knew that I needed help for my family.

I now had children and my parents I'm very close to,

and I know that I was ruining,

affecting everybody's life around me.

So that was when I said, "I need to go get some treatment."
