I just tried to deal with my life 'cause I was supposed to be a man.

Richard Adams, US Navy 1971 - 1972, talks about why he didn't ask for help with his PTSD right away.

Transcript

When I came home, friends of mine they went over two,

three years before me, back in the 60's come back,

none of us talked about it.

A lot of times when someone did talk about it,

we thought he was just full

of it 'cause most guys I know didn't want

to talk about none of that.

But we all tried to go on with our lives and some

of my friends did good.

Other friends of mine took their own lives,

died from drug overdoses.

I never talked about it.

I just tried to deal with my life 'cause I was supposed

to be a man.

Stop whining, just do your thing.

Get a job, get married, you'll be all right.

Well, that's not what happens.

I tried all of them and I lost them all because of my illness

until I went into the VA hospital

and got the help I needed.
