I don't seek help because people think I'm crazy.

Kevin Cottrell, US Army 1980 - 2008, talks about why he didn't ask for help with his PTSD right away.

Even now, I talk to a lot of Veterans on my campus

and several of them have said, "I don't seek help

because people think I'm crazy."

And I go, no, we're not crazy, we're just different.

We just need to learn what is bothering us and how to keep it

down low onto that effect on us, such as when something pops

in the school yard or somebody fires fireworks and stuff

like that, we're not jumping and hitting the ground.

We know it's going to make us a little hyper

and understand that.

People just thought we were crazy.

Some people think, when I came back,

some other guys have mentioned to me

that people think we're crazy because some GIs have gone off

and killed their wives and stuff like that.

Them are the guys who have not seeked help.

They're afraid to.

You can't be afraid to seek help.

You need to get out there, get help, whether it's

through the VA, going to see a doctor,

finding peer support, everything.

It's out there.

You just need to find it and find what works for you.
