I don't believe that disconnecting from the past is the right way to do things.

Will Florez (US Coast Guard, 1988-2010) explains why trying to shut himself off from feelings and memories didn’t work.

Transcript

I don't believe that

disconnecting from the past

is the right way to do things.

I try to compartmentalize

the things that I witness,

the things that I was unable

to do due to the circumstances,

the totality circumstances.

Compartmentalization

to me doesn't work.

It prevents

you from facing those things,

parsing out

what really happened.

What part did you play in?

Why are you feeling guilty?

Because

compartmentalizing things,

putting something in a lock box,

emotions, feelings,

anger, frustration, guilt

It doesn't work.

It did not work for me.

It was affecting

every part of my life.
