I didn't know where to go

Jerry Boggess, US Army, 1962 - 1986, talks about why he didn't ask for help with his PTSD right away.

Transcript

It takes a lot to
ask for help,

because I didn't know
where to go.

I spent a lot of
time in Germany,

and at the time I checked
into different things.

I checked into the VFW.

It was always the sit
around, drinking beer,

talking about old times,
and that was

supposed to help.

I tried it one time, and
figured that's not for me.

Landstuhl itself, which
was the big army hospital

in Germany, didn't really
have anything for it.

Don't get me wrong, they
had therapists obviously,

but there was really
nothing overseas

that quote quote

was just for PTSD,

Although
there was talk of it

or you'd read about it.

I probably read more about
it from articles

from the States

than any place else.

And in the back of my mind
I kept telling myself,

when I get there.

(chuckles)

And I knew someday, someday
I was gonna come back.

I said when I get there,
maybe I can

figure out a way

to go to some place that
something can help me.

It just took too long,
it just took too long.
