How can you "get" me if you haven't been in combat?

Dr. Ebony Butler, Clinical Psychologist, answers common questions about PTSD.

Transcript

When Veterans come in, one of their main concerns is that

"You can't possibly understand what I've been through

because you aren't a Veteran yourself."

And one of the main questions that they want to know is,

"Have you actually been to combat?"

What we like to tell Veterans is that "No."

We like to be very transparent with you.

Although we do have providers who are Veterans,

there are some of us who aren't Veterans, but we have

the experience and the knowledge to help you.

And when we don't have it, we solicit you in our collaboration

to actually teach us.

We want you to teach us what it is that we need to know

so that we can better serve you.
