He was vacant.

Melissa Hansen, Wife of a Veteran with PTSD, talks about the signs of PTSD that she saw.

Transcript

I remember the first moment I saw him

after returning from his second tour of duty.

My daughter and I had flown to Texas,

where he was staying in the hospital,

and we were walking across the parking lot,

and I could see him on the other side of the parking lot.

In the past, he would have been running

and grabbing us up and swinging us around,

and he was kind of vacant when I looked at him.

He was walking towards us, but he was vacant.

And when he spoke to me his speech was slurred.

And he was down.

He had never been down before.

He was always very alive, and he was down.

He didn't have words, he didn't really speak.

When he did, like I said, it was slurred,

and when I would talk to him

he wouldn't remember things that I had already said.
