Getting diagnosed with PTSD would not have allowed me to be a dive med tech.

Christopher D. Goehner, US Navy 2003 - 2006, talks about why he didn't ask for help with his PTSD right away.

Transcript

Before I left for my second deployment I was training

and working out to go to Dive Med School.

I know that a psychological evaluation was part

of the process and I knew if I came back

from my second deployment and had psychological issues

that I might not have that chance to go Dive School.

I might not be able to pick up rank.

I was on track, I was doing everything right

that I was supposed to, but definitely getting diagnosed

with PTSD would not have allowed me to be a Dive Med Tech

and I was worried about it and I knew I had to make a decision

between getting help and going to Dive School.

And I figured if I didn't get help for the PTSD I wasn't going

to Dive School anyways because I'd probably be dead

from committing suicide.
