Coming back with mental health problems

because of the experiences you had over there, that's real

and they really do affect your life in every way

and you really might feel like you're masking it

and you're coping, but you're really not.

And sometimes just talking and to someone

that isn't going, there's no judgment.

Someone that understands why you're struggling

with the things that you are and knowing

that you're not the only one.

I think one of the most helpful things about therapy

for me was I'd say something that I'd muster the courage

to confess to my therapist and "Oh yeah, that's very common.

I've heard that."

Just to hear that that's common and it's stuff

that you will not confess to your fellow Veterans

or you're not gonna disclose that anywhere else but in a room

with a therapist that is trained to help you work this stuff out.

And just finding out that it's normal

and it's not you just becoming a total loser

of a person is very helpful, so.
