The dentist said, "How much alcohol do you drink?"

Ayla Bennett (US Army, 2004-Present) shares how a trip to the dentist led her to seek treatment for substance use.

Transcript

My first wake up call

to alcohol

being a problem was

I was at the dentist

and they had sedated me

to extract some wisdom teeth.

And I'm waking up to

these faces looking at me

and I felt like

I had just got done sobbing.

My face was puffy

but I just woke up

just looking at what is wrong.

And they told me that

I had been sobbing.

Just, deep, gut wrenching sobs.

And the dentist said,

how much alcohol do you drink?

It was such,

to me,

a random question

why would you ask me that?

Apparently, if you drink a lot,

it affects how they sedate you

and how well the sedation works

for various procedures.

And that that was an indicator.

And apparently I had some

demons that were just

living inside of me.

And that conversation

with the dentist about alcohol

caused me for the

first time to seek treatment.
