CPT involves taking a close look at thoughts you have about yourself and about the world...

Dr. Steven Thorp (Clinical Psychologist) describes PTSD treatment.

Cognitive Processing Therapy is one of the therapies

that we provide here at the VA.

CPT includes things like talking about the event

that you went through in an overview and then

really taking a close look at the thoughts that you have

about yourself and about the world since that event happened.

Many common thoughts that Veterans with PTSD have

are thoughts that the world is a dangerous place all the time,

the thought that people can't be trusted,

the thought that the Veteran, he or she themselves,

cannot do what's needed in a situation.

And so CPT can help someone monitor and change their

thoughts over time in a way that's going to help them out.
