Dr. Karen Kattar (Clinical Psychologist) describes PTSD treatment.

CPT differs from PE in that there's more of an emphasis on

the cognitive piece, the thinking piece.

And Prolonged Exposure, or PE,

there's more of an emphasis on the behavioral piece.

So with CPT, your behavior changes

because your thinking changes, and with PE,

your thinking changes because your behavior changes.

In PE, you go out and you do things that you've been avoiding,

and then you see "Ah OK, nothing bad is going to happen to me."

So that changes your thinking.

So they both have the same outcome

where your life gets bigger, and broader, and expands,

but they just come at it in two different ways.

So one goes through your thinking and changes your behavior,

and one goes through your behavior and changes your thinking.

And basically, we have these options for people to be able

to choose which one might be the better fit for them

based on how they learn, how they are facing

or not facing their trauma symptoms.
