Both PE and CPT try to get you to the same place.

Dr. Sonya Norman (Clinical Psychologist) describes PTSD treatment.

Transcript

Both PE and CPT try to get you to the same place.

So PE, you start doing things, and the idea is that

if I haven't gone to the grocery store at a crowded time

in 10 years, I'm going to believe that I can't handle it.

But because now I'm going, I see that I handle it,

so my thought changes,

and now my thought is, "I can handle it."

And I did that by actually going to the store.

Whereas CPT, you start challenging that thought and saying,

"Well, what's the evidence that I can't handle

going to the grocery store?

What's the evidence that I can?"

And you start really examining that thought and realizing

that it's not really a fact,

it's not really a law of the world that this thought is true.

And then, because you've challenged the thought,

you're more willing to go out and go to the store.

So the end result is you're reclaiming your life.

You're doing the things you've been avoiding,

your world is opening up,

you're putting yourself in situations you might actually enjoy

and might actually find rewarding and meaningful.

But you're getting there in kind of different ways.
