Being in the woods would act as a trigger for me.

Donald Sullivan, US Army 1969 - 1970, talks about how he knew he had PTSD.

Transcript

My son was in the Scouts and I was the Scout Master

of the troop for three years but I never went

on a hike with the troop.

I always made sure there were other leaders available

and the basic reason was that being

in the woods would act as a trigger for me.

I would spend, rather than enjoying being outside,

I spent the whole time going through the woods,

picking out potential sites for ambushes or for danger areas.

And it would tend to make things a lot more difficult to sleep

that night after spending a day of doing that, then the dreams,

the nightmares would come back.
