In the African American community,

when it comes to mental health, we pray.

That's the first thing that
we do, is, we pray about it.

We go to church, we
sing, we pray about it.

When I got home in 2010,

I told my mom what I was going through,

and she took me to church.

And we sang in church together.

We prayed a lot about everything
that I was going through.

However, I was still drinking
as soon as I left church,

smoking with my good friend,
and dealing with everything,

with the physical and mental pain

that I had dealing with my injury.

And I just eventually had
to tell my mom I need more

than this because I'm praying
and nothing is happening.

Nothing is happening at all.

And I started to go see
a professional at the VA

while still going to church with my mom.

And then, I finally got the
medication that I needed.

And then, slowly, things
started to get better for me.
